Tamil Cinema and Politics

Here is a podcast of a talk “Tamil Cinema and Politics” delivered by Mr. Randor Guy, the famous Tamil Cinema historian and writer of crime.

The talk is split into two twenty five minute files. The first five minutes of the talk is not there. Having read his lucid sentences, it was a pleasant surprise to listen to him speak with that same lucidity, fluency and quick wit.

For the uninitiated (given the poor attendance at the talk, I suspect there are many), a brief intro: Rangadurai became “Randor Gai” in the mouths of the then ruling Britishers and eventually Randor Guy. He writes every Friday in the Hindu supplement on old Tamil movies. Some years back he used to write a lot on crime, a treasure trove of all long last writers of that genre. I have newspaper cuttings of most of these columns stored in my hometown. Here is a recent essay by him on Sherlock Holmes.

After the talk, as I was asking permission for hosting the talk at this blog, pat comes the reply from this spirited elderly walking encyclopedia of movies, “Blog, ya, I also write one“.

BTW, during this talk, there was a blogging workshop going on at the other hall. This writer’s science blogging avatar was stirred but not shaken, in getting overlooked for an in-house invite to share his years of nightly spoils, just for a weird memento in return. In a bewildering twist, by active internet writing, I have become in-house-anonymous. One more solid proof that the blame for the perennial academic disconnect lies squarely with everyone else around me.
